Funding for historical preservation

I attended a talk recently on the Adopt a Monument scheme run by The Council for Scottish Archaeology. One particular project was going to require in excess of £7,000 funding. I couldn't help compare that to the funding for the London Olympics, currently estimated at £9,000,000,000 and who know what the final cost will be.
To make my life easier I will assume that the cost of preserving that monument was £9,000.
That means that for the cost of running the Olympics
Britain could preserve 1 million monuments
- that's 1 for every 60 people in Britain.
Picture the size of your village, town or city. How much money for preservation would that be for your community?
How many historical treasures could be saved?
It's a thought, isn't it?
P.S. I like the Olympics.
