St Peter's Church, Inveravon, Banffshire.
Four Pictish symbols stones fixed to the south wall of the church.
These stones are all Class 1 Pictish symbol stones and date from the 6th to 8th centuries. They are all un-worked rough stone with pagan symbols incised (Carved) none of these show any crosses.
- The Inveravon Stones (4 off).
This stone was moved to its current location in 1903, prior to this is stood in the middle of the kirkyard.
The stone has four incised symbols and from top to bottom these are:
Crescent and V-rod,
Three circles and a bar,
A comb,
And a mirror.
This stone was originally placed in the east wall of the church, and is thought to have once been much larger, having been cut down in size and used as building block.
The symbol appears to depict the head of a Pictish beast, often thought of as an elephant, but could possibly be a dolphin. It also looks a bit bird-like.
This stone was originally located in the wall of the preceeding St Peter's Church.
This stone has four incised symbols, and from top to bottom these are:
A decorated disc or a shield with an extension,
An eagle,
A mirror,
And a comb.
This stone has two incised symbols, and from top to bottom these are:
Crescent and V-rod (Very weathered).
Pictish Beast (Very weathered).
