About the GroupThe Group formed originally in the early nineties with it's regular meeting place being the village community centre. It had a proper structure with a healthy membership and continued in this form until the end of 2001 when members of the committee were no longer able to continue in office for numerous reasons including health and family commitments and so, with great reluctance, the group disbanded. Not too long after, some of the original members decided to meet informally and continue the good work that others had started. The group does not have a committee and continues as an informal entity, nevertheless it holds regular meetings at the village resource centre known as the 'Lampie Hoose' - it is hoped that one day the group may once again be formalised. In the meantime, we shall continue to move along as we are at present. The paraffin lamp has a place in the history of Portgordon - The village was one of the last in the area to receive an electricity supply (in the 1920's) and became known as the 'Paraffin City'
MeetingsThe Group meets every second wednesday of the month in the Lampie Hoose located in Gordon Square, which is the centre of the village. Meetings start at 2.00pm and end at 4.00pm. The usual format is to have a speaker followed by refreshments. The social aspect is well worth the effort and the speakers cover a wide variety of subjects. We each pay a contribution of £2 towards the cost of the venue and feel this modest sum represents good value for an afternoons entertainment. Feel free to come along and join us Our meeting placeAt one time the 'Lampie Hoose' served as the village post office, then it became a library and eventually, thanks to some very far sighted people, it was established as a village resource centre. It's the meeting place for a number of Groups located in the village and a nice social atmosphere can be felt whenever you step through the door - Welcome |
