PORTGORDON or PORT GORDON
Which is the correct version - One word or two? Opinions seem divided as to the proper spelling of the village name. It's an interesting subject and one that can cause considerable debate. It all seems to be a matter of opinion. It's interesting to note from the pictures here - the station appears to support both versions. What do you think? It must have been a fine place to wait for a train in good weather, with the station buildings facing north 'though it would perhaps have been a different story in adverse weather. There are no longer any traces of the station structure or it's buildings for the area is now home to the village bowling green and the railtrack, long since lifted, is now a pleasant walkway. What memories it must hold.
A rather melancholy sight and one sure to evoke memories of the passing of steam. It was a sorry day when the station closed to passenger traffic - This picture is dated August 1959 The station opened in August 1885 and closed to passenger traffic in1968 |
