FarmingMany folk believe that Portgordon was established to create a Fishing Port. In many respects this is true. However, prior to the fishing the land around these parts was farmed extensively and these farms go back well before Portgordon became a village. One of our Group, Anne MacWilliam, has done extensive research into her own family history and has provided the Group with several interesting presentations on the subject. Anne has also provided a number of photographs that give the viewer an insight into the farming Community Anne has very kindly allowed the Group to place some of these pictures on the website and there will be more detail about them in due course It's worth mentioning that Anne is a strong supporter of the Heritage group and always makes a great effort to attend the displays that the Group puts on from time to time at local events Even today a look at the farms locally is a journey back in time. Of course every farm is a business in its own right and that's always been the way. They certainly have to be progressive to survive. It's nice that the village is surrounded by them; and their past A modern look at the oldThis is an amazing working model recording in full working detail one of the new fangled machines of the day The steam powered Traction Engine provided a source of power that in it's day was phenomenal. These machines increased productivity no end and thanks to the real enthusiasts, like Fred Dibnah and others, the memory lives on and many of these fine machines are preserved for all to enjoy. Next time you see one just think of the engineering involved in building it More of the FamilyThis page has generated a fair bit of interest perhaps because it does remind visitors that farming was, and still is, vital to the community. Anne has many pictures in her collection and it is hoped she will give permission to use more of them on the site. Interesting fact: Did you know that the term 'Mains of' when referred to a building on Ordnance Survey maps means 'principal or premier farm in the area. for example 'Mains of Tannochy' as can be seen when looking at the map that includes Portgordon |
