Meeting 8th September 2010
Mairi Dick opened the meeting with a few words about the scenic aspect of the West Highland Railway and added that it's beauty was largely unchanged from her days as a schoolchild. A film show of that railway, and others, followed and although the limitations of the projector were obvious it was nonetheless a nice experience to see, and hear, steam trains running through some wonderful scenery After a short break for refreshments Anne McWilliam read some poetry in local dialect covering herring fishing and a locally grown herb. Anne did a splendid job of translating the rarely heard words into plain English for the benefit of those present that did not have local knowledge All in all a splendid afternoons entertainment with nice refreshments included Meeting (14th March 2010)
The meeting enjoyed refreshments after hearing a short presentation by Malcolm regarding the formalising of the group. This was followed by Kay providing information on the life of George Preston Stronach GC The Group is really in need of some suitable equipment to further the Groups desire to offer more to its current core of participants and at the same time offer more to those that might wish to come along and join us - the door is always open. A fixed projector and screen along with a sound system coupled to a laptop computer would enable better presentations to take place. In addition, other users of the Lampie Hoose could well benefit from such an installation. For example the Computer Class - instead of crowding around a computer screen the display could be on the projector screen with the class seated and able to watch in a reasonable degree of comfort. The cost of suitable equipment would be between £1,000 and £1,500. This is beyond the modest means the Group currently has in its funds. Formalising the Group would open up the possibility of applying for funding from appropriate sources. Although there are no guarantees the applications would be successful it would at least be a possibility. Such a move would add a great deal to the experience of attending meetings and would provide a great resource for all. The meeting resolved to discuss this further at the next meeting in May (12th May 2.00pm in the Lampie Hoose) George Preston Stronach
Kay Griffin gave us something to think about by producing a book on the life of George Preston Stronoch GC (1912 - 1999) George was a captain in the Merchant Navy. His bravery during World War two was such that he was awarded the George Cross. At the time (1943) he was a Chief Officer when his ship came under attack from enemy forces. The Captain was killed in the attack and George took command even though he himself was injured. He dragged injured crew to safety placing himself in great danger in the process. The ship was on fire and its cargo was petrol and ammunition. Danger indeed. |
